Library and Archive

The Maritime Museum of Ílhavo, an institution devoted to the study and preservation of maritime heritage, fulfils its mission promoting maritime cultures through its library and archive. The library is a thematic library, created from acquisitions and donations, which includes books and documents related to the sea and the fishing, especially the cod-fishing. The bibliographical collection consists of about 8000 monographs and 2000 Portuguese and abroad magazines.

The access to the library is open and free and its users can make use of the following services:

  • Local reading;
  • Public lending;
  • Reference service and assistance in research;
  • Access to the imagoteca;
  • Access to the archival and restrict material.

The archive, which complements the library, has a rich and varied collection of documents, donated by local people, local and regional associations and companies who, overtime, entrusted their estates to this institution, legal depositary of memories and identities.

The centrality of scientific and cultural research for the Maritime Museum project states it as privileged institution for researchers in social sciences in general and in museology and maritime themes and cod fishing in particular.
