The 5th edition of the biennial competition “Prémio Octávio Lixa Filgueiras” has applications open until May 31, with the submission of works until August 30, 2021. The contest aims to promote research in the field of maritime culture, evoking the work and memory of Octávio Lixa Filgueiras, one of the most recognized Portuguese researchers on the culture of the sea.

Organized by Ílhavo City Hall, through the Ílhavo Maritime Museum, this award has a monetary value of 2.500 euros and is intended to reward authors of academic dissertations or unpublished research works carried out within the scope of the maritime-fluvial culture, namely in the areas of Maritime History, Naval Architecture, Maritime Anthropology, Underwater Archaeology, Maritime Heritage and Museology.

The winner will be announced on November 20th, 2021, in the scope of the National Day of the Sea.

The Octávio Lixa Filgueiras Prize for Studies in Culture of the Sea was instituted in 2012, by the Museum and by the Ílhavo City Hall, at the time of the definitive donation of the personal archive of the architect professor Octávio Lixa Filgueiras. It is a recognized tribute to the memory of this remarkable academic, his remarkable research and a clear extension of his rich documental estate and valuable library.

In the previous edition, which was distinguished by a wide and diverse participation, the jury distinguished the work of Mafalda Batista Pinheiro Pacheco, with the title "Fuzeta - a unique piscatorial urban nucleus", which stood out for presenting a consistent study, which results in a great contribution to safeguarding the knowledge of urban history, in particular of a very relevant community in the Algarve region, whose knowledge is expanded in a multidisciplinary perspective.
