The Splicing Fid is, by definition, an elongated conical shaped piece used to make seams on sisal, manila, cairo or cotton ropery. It can be made of wood or whalebone and the end is usually reinforced with brass for added strength. The pieces were donated to the museum in 1991, but its origin is unknown.
