The VI edition of the seminar, to be held on October 21, 2017, on the occasion of the 16th Anniversary of the Extension and Remodeling of the MMI, will be dedicated to "Tragic-Maritime History". A central theme in Portuguese culture, the "Tragic-Maritime History" also inspired the temporary exhibition at the Museum and the concert of the Orquestra Filarmonia das Beiras, around the homonymous work of Fernando Lopes-Graça.
This seminar, open to all, brings together the best specialists in literature, art and history. By approaching the roots of this central narrative of maritime culture and its contemporary approaches, we propose a reflection on Portugal's relationship with the sea and a debate on this timeless theme of maritime tragedy. A special visit to the Tragic-Maritime History exhibition and a roundtable on the refugee tragedy and on the role of the Portuguese Navy stand out in the program.
In this edition, we intend, once again, in articulation with the most diverse institutions and public communities, to continue to disseminate moments of informal education and civic construction around the maritime themes. The theme of "Tragic-Maritime History", seen through literature, art and history, seeks to revisit a fateful vision and promote a deep reflection on the relationship between society and the sea and the timeless theme of maritime tragedies.
The seminar has the partnership of the Center for Transdisciplinary Research "Culture, Space and Memory" (CITCEM), the School of Arts of the University of Porto, the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies of the 20th Century (CEIS20) of the University of Coimbra, and the Center of Humanities (CHAM) of the University Nova of Lisboa.
The Maritime Museum of Ílhavo (MMI), through its research sub-unit, CIEMar-Ílhavo, created in 2012 a series of seminars entitled Challenges of the Portuguese Sea. After five editions dedicated to themes related to the multidisciplinary concept of maritime culture, whether due to historical, cultural or social factors or their pertinence at the present time, the Portuguese Sea Challenges became a privileged stage at the national level to discuss themes related to Culture of the Sea.
